The most widely read newspaper in Nigeria

I was asked at a radio interview if I thought and believed that Nigerian are poor readers and I responded that I wouldn’t use the word ‘poor’ but ‘misdirected and inadequate.’ I gave my reasons. People go to gossip sites to read news, in fact, some young and middle-aged individuals have so much information on entertainment, musicians and artists, both home and abroad, that one can easily consult with them without going through an internet search.

At a conference I attended several years ago, a participant expressed her frustration at the lack of integrity of some citadels of higher learning at the recruitment of the best brains for lecturing positions. She was a first class graduate from her department having completed master’s degree at the same department, at the same university, earning a PhD grade—from her grasp of speech and oral prowess, one could easily conclude that she was worth her onions.

I stumbled on a quote said to be written by a South-Africa lecturer, ‘How a Nation is Collapsed’, “collapsing any nation does not require use of atomic bombs or the use of Long range missiles. But it requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in the exams by the students…The collapse of education is the collapse of a nation.”

When the environment no longer encouraged intellectual and academic research and reading, it unconsciously promoted a culture of mediocrity—and the outcome is the low quality of outputs, products and services that came out of the bypassing of rigorous intellectual work, craftsmanship and apprentice-ship.
