Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, has quickly risen to become one of the most popular and influential R&B singers in the world. Her unique sound, which blends elements of Afrobeats, soul, and pop, has captivated listeners around the globe. Tems has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Drake, Wizkid, and Justin Bieber. She has also won numerous awards, including a BET Award and a Grammy Award nomination.
In a statement for TIME magazine, Grammy-winning singer Mary J. Blige compared Tems to legendary musician Nina Simone. “They both sing with emotion and conviction, making you feel every word they sing,” Blige said. Tems’ inclusion on the TIME Next 100 list is a result of her talent and influence. She is a true inspiration, and her inclusion on the TIME Next 100 list is a well-deserved honor.
Tems is not the only Nigerian on the TIME Next 100 list. Dr. Toyin Ajayi, the founder and CEO of Cityblock Health, was also recognized for addressing social drivers of poor health and creating sustainable change for vulnerable communities.”
