Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Monday (Aug. 17) said that the local government will coordinate with the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) following its bulletin report saying that a new strain of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has been detected in a small sample taken in the city.

“We will ask clarifications from PGC regarding the study they conducted,” Belmonte said in a text message to the Manila Bulletin.

For now, Belmonte said that “one cannot conclude” that the mutated strain is “unique only to Quezon City,” on the basis that PGC only used the city’s samples. PGC on Sunday reported that it detected a mutated strain of SARS-CoV-2—from D614 to G614—in a “small sample of positive cases.” PGC also said the mutated strain “appear[s] to have higher levels of viral RNA,” which means it is more infectious. “However, there is still no definitive evidence showing that carriers of the G614 variant are actually more transmissible than those with D614, and the mutation does not appear to substantially affect clinical outcomes as well.”
