Public schools across Oyo State have been closed following directives from the Nigeria Union of Teachers to protest the kidnapping of students and teachers in Ahoro Esienle. While SS3 students preparing for exams are allowed entry, others were sent home. A peaceful protest in Ibadan, featuring chants of 'bring back our children' and 'enough is enough', demanded government and security agency action. Protesters emphasized the need for safe educational environments.
Public schools across the 33 local government areas of Oyo state were on Monday shut, putting on hold academic activities. The development followed the directives of the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Teachers , Abuja.
The leadership had directed its members nationwide to embark on peaceful protest to call for the release of the kidnapped students and teachers of both public and private schools in Ahoro Esienle in Oriire local government area of Oyo state. In compliance with the National Secretariat of the Union, the public schools in the eleven local government areas of Ibadanland are strictly put under lock and key.
Students of some of the schools in Molete, Orita Challenge, New Garage and Odo ona area were forced to return to their respective home. However, it was observed that only the SS3 students that are writing their terminal examination will be allowed into the school premises.
Additionally, a group of concerned citizens who staged a peaceful protesters converged at Mokola before embarking on a march through major roads leading to Gate, drawing the attention of residents, commuters, and business owners along the route. Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the demonstrators expressed outrage over the incident and called for immediate action to secure the release of the abducted students and teachers Protesters repeatedly chanted, “bring back our children! ” and “enough is enough!
”, demanding a response from security agencies and government at all levels. Speaking during the protest, one of the protesters, Mrs Esther Olowokere said, “They are innocent children and teachers whose only crime was going to school. We cannot continue to live in fear while our schools become targets. The government must act decisively and ensure their safe return.
”Another protester who craved anonymous lamented the growing insecurity affecting educational institutions, stating, “every child deserves to learn in a safe environment. We are here today because we refuse to remain silent while families suffer and communities live in uncertainty. ” The demonstrators urged the authorities to intensify search and rescue efforts, improve security around schools, and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
They also called on community leaders, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to unite in advocating for the protection of children and teachers. The protesters reiterated their demand for urgent intervention, vowing to continue peaceful advocacy until the abducted pupils and teachers are safely reunited with their families. The protest, according to one of the teachers who craved anonymity is in solidarity with the kidnapped teachers and students of Ahoro Esienle community.
“We cannot imagine the pains and agonies of the kidnapped students and their teachers in the past 18 days. Our appeal is for both the Federal and the state government to expedite action on their release”, he noted. As of the time of filing this report the protesters who are currently occupying the main entrance gate of the Oyo State government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan vowed to continue the protest until the release of the abductees are secured.
The convergence which saw the entrance gate of the Secretariat shut caused a traffic gridlock for commuters who are plying the road.
