Pro golfer targeted by activists at last year's Open at St Andrews; security on it's toes at Hoylake

R&A boss Martin Slumbers confirmed there was intelligence suggesting a threat to one of the players last July at the Old Course.“We had a very credible threat that came through … that one of the most senior players in the field was going to be targeted by an environmental activist,” Slumbers said. “That’s all I really want to say.”

This week at Hoylake, security officials are on their toes as golf’s oldest tournament presents a large target for the Just Stop Oil activist group that disrupted Wimbledon by twice running on the the court and throwing confetti and puzzle pieces onto the famous grass. The group’s leader, Dale Vince, has promised to target more high-profile sporting events.

“We have significant security procedures in place. We work clearly with the law enforcement agencies, and we’ll wait and see what happens,” Slumbers said of this week’s threat. “You will have seen that we advised the players, please don’t get involved, and I stand by that. We have enough things in place to be able to deal with it.”

Masters champion Jon Rahm was asked earlier in the week about the possibility of protesters interrupting the championship. The Spaniard, at times known for a fiery temper, agreed Royal Liverpool seems a relatively easy target. “Being a golf course in a bigger area they might have more room to run around and do what they need to do, but what I can assure you is you don’t want to get hit by a golf ball.”
