President Bola Tinubu has approved funds for the immediate operationalisation of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute in Nigeria . Mohammed Idris, the information minister, made the announcement during a meeting with Tawfik Jelassi, UNESCO 's assistant director-general for communication and information. The institute, located in the Federal Capital Territory, aims to address global challenges such as misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech .
Jelassi emphasized the importance of fostering a safer and more reliable internet, which aligns with UNESCO's key priorities. He also highlighted the new Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms, aimed at promoting critical thinking and platform transparency while safeguarding freedom of expression. Idris welcomed the UNESCO MIL cities initiative and pledged to ensure Nigeria takes full advantage
