Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights activist, talks about the legal implications of the dethronement and banishment of Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi withWas Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, right to remove Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, from office?
A former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar , said in an interview with VOA Africa service that Sanusi wouldn’t have been removed if Buhari had intervened. What do you think about that statement? All the federal agencies that have come to intervene in the matter surely point to the fact that federal powers were involved in the dethronement, and by that we mean the Presidency.I believe that two things are clear. The Kano Emirate Council Law seems to give wide powers to the governor in respect of removal of chiefs generally.
What do you think about the allegations levelled against Sanusi, which include financial impropriety? Do you think the state lawmakers can initiate an impeachment proceeding against Ganduje for not allowing them to do their work before removing Sanusi as emir?
