Medical experts have said the poverty rate in the country could worsen malnutrition and healthcare indices in the country if drastic measures were not taken to address it.

UNICEF said an estimated two million children in Nigeria a10 children affected were currently reached with treatment while seven per cent of women of childbearing age also suffered from acute malnutrition.

Reacting to the NBS report, a Professor of Public Health, University of Ilorin, Tanimola Akande, said with the increasing poverty rate, many people would not be able to access quality health care in the country. Prof. Akande said, “In addition, they will be heavily deprived of the essentials that give them good health, like good nutrition, housing, education, water, sanitation. They, therefore, suffer high morbidity from common easily preventable diseases like malaria, malnutrition, among others.

“When they are ill, they cannot afford quality health care and therefore, patronise sub-optimal health services or alternative health care. This can make simple ailments get complicated and that often lead to death. “Studies have shown lower immunisation coverage among the poor, higher teenage pregnancies with its consequences, lower contraceptive uptake and stressful lifestyles.”All rights reserved.
