Hopes of a fitness sector recovery after two years of COVID-19 interruptions have been dashed, as the Omicron outbreak keeps people away from gyms and trainers turn their back on the industry.
But the sector is facing another immediate problem which is currently plaguing the health, hospitality and logistics sector.
"It's completely understandable. If you're constantly not being able to go work because your facilities are being closed or you can't go to a public park or run a boot camp because of restrictions … it's no wonder people have left for a more regular workplace."Carla Torres, who has been a personal trainer and health coach for 12 years, considered a career change herself. But that hasn't happened.
Extra staffing required to enforce COVID-19 policies put further financial pressure on fitness centres, IBISWorld said. "And because we have experienced so much closure over the last two years, people are doing absolutely anything they can to keep open."It's not all doom and gloom, however.
