After several close calls involving students and traffic, police in Santa Clara-Ivins are reminding parents and children about the importance of safe pedestrian habits around school zones.

Salt Lake County, Utah, reported that school zone crosswalks monitored by crossing guards saw zero auto-student pedestrian crashes for the 2023 school year. Police in Santa Clara-Ivins release safety reminders for kids walking or biking to school after receiving reports of unsafe traffic behavior by students.

“We’ve had parents call in about kids crossing the road where there is no crosswalk, where they aren’t really paying attention,” said Mike Pondoyo of the Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department., comes after a 5-year-old boy was hit by a car in Riverton and a 10-year-old girl was hit by a car in North Salt Lake. Both kids were walking to school when the accidents happen.10-year-old girl in critical condition after getting hit by car while walking to school“When there is a ladder crosswalk, that’s a school crosswalk. Cars cannot cross that until a pedestrian has crossed all the way through,” said Pondoyo. School crosswalks are marked with flashing lights. School zone speed limits are 20 miles per hour, and crosswalks connected to schools will have crossing guards directing traffic at the beginning and end of the school day.“We’ve had a couple close calls the other day where kids were just rushing across the street without looking both ways,” said Pondoyo.“When it pertains to kids, we want to make sure they are paying attention,” said Pondoyo. “If there is a crossing guard on duty, make sure to walk to that crossing guard instead of just crossing on your own.” He said that, when it comes to resisting the urge to jaywalk, parents need to model this behavior for their children. “We’ve see this issue recently where the parent will park on the side of the road to drop their kids off. The crossing guard is 20 feet away. Teach your kids to walk to the crossing guard as opposed to walking across the street where there is no safety for them,” said Pondoyo.“You want to stay visible. It’s hard if you’re going 35 miles per hour on a normal street and someome just decides to run across,' Pondoyo said. 'There’s a timing aspect to it, there’s a reaction aspect to it.
