Pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria three biggest killers of children in Africa –Expert

The Chief Executive Officer of Novartis, Vas Narasimhan, has identified pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria as the three biggest killer diseases of children in Africa. He called on African leaders to take action to protect children against those diseases.

He said, “A child dies of pneumonia every 39 seconds. This preventable disease kills more children than any other infection in Africa and the world. “Also, sickle cell disease is the single most important genetic cause of childhood mortality globally, and it takes a heavy toll on African children, also making them more susceptible to serious infections, most notably malaria and pneumonia.”

On malaria, he said, “The fight against malaria is one of the greatest public health successes. From 2000 to 2015, the mortality rate among children under-five fell by more than 70 per cent in Africa.“Today, we call on the global health community to continue to mobilize resources and energy to ensure all children can grow up free of pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria.
