Several communities in Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State have been devastated and ravaged by flood caused by a downpour, even as residents say that it is the worst disaster in over 70 years in the area.
Musa said: “From what I saw in the locations I visited, the extent of damage is very, very devastating. I’ve seen so many houses that were washed to the ground; I have seen so many animals that died as a result of the impact of the running water. “Unfortunately, all these happened because our forests are being depleted and as a result, when it rains, the places that used to hold water in the bushes cannot do so again, so it has to go to the river and the only way is to flow through the houses.”Asked on the extent of damage, he said, “In Celedi alone, not less than 150 houses were destroyed and razed to the ground, apart from the ones that were soaked. There are many other villages that were affected.
“The water came from unknown sources and, coupled with the lack of proper drainages in the communities, it was a very terrible situation that the affected areas have never experienced in over 70 years.“Although no life was lost, hundreds of mud houses were totally destroyed and the victims are very devastated and traumatised because of the serious situation they are facing due to lack of places to sleep, no food to eat and many other woes.
