The Philippines may have not gotten a favorable response from China regarding the arbitral ruling, but the government should not stop from invoking its landmark victory on the South China Sea dispute.
Vice presidential spokesperson Barry Gutierrez said this in reaction to China’s refusal to recognize the country’s arbitral win during a meeting of President Rodrigo Duterte with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
The Robredo camp has been pushing for the current administration to assert the landmark ruling in the South China Sea, part of which is the West Philippine Sea that belongs to the Philippines. But for Gutierrez, the Philippine government should also stand firm to assert the arbitral ruling even with China brushing it aside.
