Peruvian prosecutors said late Tuesday they were investigating President Dina Boluarte and her ousted predecessor Pedro Castillo for alleged money laundering and illegal campaign financing during the 2021 presidential election.

“The alleged commission of these crimes would have occurred during the electoral campaign of Free Peru in 2021,” when Castillo was running for the presidency and Boluarte for the vice-presidency, it said. Boluarte took over as president but has faced calls to resign by protesters also demanding fresh elections.
