Local GPs say they are bearing the brunt of care for rising COVID-19 cases in NSW during what is normally their quietest period, as the state again exceeded its daily infection record.
But Dr Danielle McMullen, NSW president of the Australian Medical Association, said the daily report of COVID-19 hospitalisations and intensive care admissions did not give a complete picture of the strain rising cases – even with mild disease – were causing in other parts of the health system “GPs are now trying to work out: Do I spend time talking to my COVID-positive patients, or do I spend time delivering a booster dose?”, with cases directed to call a local GP or a hotline number if they are concerned by mild symptoms or an ambulance if they have trouble breathing, have chest pain or feel faint.
Dr McMullen said it made sense that the public, after being told for two years to be extremely cautious about COVID-19, would become very conservative and seek medical attention once positive, even if their illness was only mild.“Most of the calls coming through are just people who are worried and not sure what to do,” she said.
