The conflict originated when Anyanwu stepped down to contest the Imo State governorship election, prompting Ude-Okoye's selection by the Southeast wing of the party as his replacement. This situation led to a legal battle, culminating in the Court of Appeal in Enugu declaring Ude-Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary. However, Anyanwu maintains that Ude-Okoye lacks the authority to assume the position, citing his appeal of the ruling at the Supreme Court as justification for upholding the existing status quo
