Claudine Cheng, president of the APA Heritage Foundation: “I see myself as a volunteer who is driven to achieve his or her cause, just like many others in The City.”
“I don’t know,” she said. “I see myself as a volunteer who is driven to achieve his or her cause, just like many others in The City.”— the nonprofit that runs the festival — and organizer of the APA Heritage Celebration Committee. The committee is a 30-person cadre of volunteer community leaders from within San Francisco’s expansive Asian American community.
In 1987, she joined OCA, and was elected president of the organization four years later. The experience allowed her to see the “big picture of the broader issues affecting Asian Pacific Americans in the country,” she said. “What I appreciate most is that she really created this essential platform,” Xu said. “That’s where you can tell your story. You can engage people. You can raise your voice, you can demand visibility, you can demand to be treated equally.”Since the inaugural festival in 2005, Cheng said, she has seen more voices and organizations emerge to champion The City’s Asian population, as well as a growing collaboration among them.“It doesn’t mean that sometimes communities don’t see issues differently.
“If we feel that we are important and we really want to celebrate us, then we should lay the red carpet out for us. Who else is going to do it for us?” she said. “It’s not for fame. It’s to show that we are proud of ourselves.”District 9 supervisor candidate Roberto Hernandez stands in front of his campaign headquarters, the former location of Philz Coffee at 24th and Folsom Streets in The City., announced this week that his campaign will be headquartered at 3101 24th St. leading up to the Nov.
Pepe Rodriquez, chairperson of CANA SF’s board of directors, said that Hernandez has brought people together throughout The City for decades through culture, arts, housing and an array of social-services programs. Ryen Motzek, president of the Mission Merchants Association, told The Examiner that Hernandez’s years of advocating for the neighborhood has fostered meaningful connections that allow Hernandez to see his ideas come to fruition.
Once the headquarters is up and running, Hernandez said, he will continue to hold meetings with residents across District 9. His campaign has already surveyed more than 500 District 9 residents to determine what issues are of concern to them, and Hernandez said he hopes to continue outreach through the space.
Ernest “EJ” Jones, candidate for District 11 Supervisor, pictured in front of the former St. Emydius School where he attended Chen said she did not remember how she voted on the recalls, but she said she doesn’t believe in recalls and did not support Gov. Gavin Newsom’s attempted recall in 2021. Jones has extensive experience working with local community groups on a volunteer and professional basis, having served as past board president for the I.T. Bookman Community Center and co-founded a meal distribution service to fight hunger. It was while helping coordinate a neighborhood COVID-19 response center that he came to be hired by Safai, for whom he worked for nearly two years.“No one has more time working in the district,” he said. “I’m the community candidate.
Jones, who launched his campaign in August and had qualified for public campaign funding, had disclosed raising more than $70,000 in private campaign contributions.Chyanne Chen, candidate for Supervisor District 11, pictured at Geneva Avenue and Mission Street in San Francisco on Friday, April 26, 2024.
