Our children are dying of malnutrition –Lagos destitute home residents
Residents of the Destitute Home in the Ebute-Meta area of Lagos have cried out for help over malnutrition and hunger in the camp.
Yaya said though no COVID-19 test has been conducted in the home and no infection recorded yet, he fears the virus might spread rapidly if one person contracts it due to their low immunity. “This is made worse by the discrimination we face at government-owned hospitals when our children or wives fall sick,” Gambo lamented.
He disclosed that the home has been recording a high infant and child mortality rate, due to the inability to get the best, affordable healthcare provided by the state government for the masses. “We need food and medicines for our pregnant women and children. We might be poor but we can’t afford to see them suffer by starving to death.
It noted that malnutrition is a direct or underlying cause of 45 per cent of all deaths of under-five children.
