Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has said that his administration was determined to end open defection in the State in 2030, in line with the United Nations sustainable development goal number six. Otti said this at Okigwe Park in Umuahia on Wednesday while commissioning integrated sanitation and toilet facilities for the public.
He noted that the government can not be campaigning for sanitation or forbidding people from engaging in open defecation without providing the alternative. Otti said that the projects which are being built in other parts of the State, would immensely enhance hygiene of the people and improve public health. 'This is a great project because you cannot talk about sanitation or forbidding open defecation without providing better alternative', the Governor said.
Speaking at the event, Abia State Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday said that the facility has three toilets for male and another three for the female with washrooms in each section. He added that the project, which is powered with renewable electricity, is integrated to provide free public water to the residents. Similarly, Otti on Wednesday commissioned solar power in Abia State Specialist hospital, Umuahia, and flagged off the resuscitation of Aba water scheme.
