Segun Olowookere, sentenced to death for cattle rustling, will be pardoned by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Segun Olowookere, who has spent 10 years on death row awaiting execution for cattle rustling, is set to be released after the governor of Osun State , Ademola Adeleke, promised to pardon him. In 2010, Olowookere was 17 years old when he was arrested with another man named Morakinyo Sunday. They were accused of raiding a police officer's house and a local farmer's house, stealing items from the farms and a vintage gun.
In 2014, Justice Jide Falola of the Osun State High Court sentenced them to death by hanging after finding them guilty of stealing from the police officer's house. This case sparked national attention in Nigeria, leading to debates about the severity of the sentence. In a statement on Tuesday, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered the commencement of Olowookere's pardon. He stated, 'I have directed the Attorney General to begin the process of pardoning this young man. Osun State is a state of justice, and we must ensure that justice is served while protecting the lives of our people,' the governor wrote on his X page. However, it is unclear what will happen to Morakinyo Sunday, who was sentenced to death alongside Olowookere, as his name was not mentioned in the statement. Over the years, Olowookere's parents, human rights groups, and other Nigerians have actively campaigned for his release. His parents have stated that he is their only child, and therefore he should be pardoned. Olowookere is expected to be released in early 2025
