Opinion: Attention in tabloid world is now focused on the second part of the “Harry & Meghan” doc series, which is set to drop on Netflix next Thursday. Let's see if Volume 2 is this calm and clear-eyed.

Whew, what a relief for whiplashed monarchy fans! No live-grenade revelations were lobbed over the palace walls yesterday with the release of the first volume of “Harry & Meghan.

There were a few thinly veiled criticisms, including Meghan’s line about William and Kate not being huggers, and Harry saying that he followed his heart when choosing to marry Meghan, unlike others in the royal fold who have, as Harry put it, “an urge to marry someone who would fit in the mould.” But overall, these were mild gripes compared to the couple’s blockbuster Oprah interview last March.

In the series, Harry addressed unconscious bias. “In this family, sometimes you are part of the problem rather than part of the solution. There is a huge level of unconscious bias,” he said to camera. “The thing with unconscious bias, it is actually no one’s fault. But once it has been pointed out, or identified within yourself you then need to make it right.

“Harry & Meghan” features many invocations of Diana. As a bereaved son, Harry is free to make as many comparisons of his wife to his mother as he wants. His memories of his mother’s torment at the hands of the tabloid press are also totally valid, and the fact that what he saw happening to his wife feels to him like an echo of that. His vow to protect his family is poignant, and raising awareness of the effects of all that speculation and intrusion and vitriol is an important cause.

I’m not going to debate the nature of truth — the tortured definition of that word is the great and futile ping-pong game of our time — except to say that the Queen came up with a remarkable phrase to address all this in the form of “recollections may vary.” Looking back, I don’t think she was being dismissive of Harry and Meghan. She was looking to the long game.
