Another Baseball Hall of Fame shutout would mean the system is working — not broken. To enter the Hall, a player must receive at least 75 per cent of the vote. That’s a high benchmark, as it should be for the sport’s most prodigious honour. Opinion

It’s possible that, for a second consecutive year, nobody will receive enough votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, but that doesn’t mean the system is broken. This type of result should have been expected all along.

Do Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds belong in the Hall? For baseball fans, it’s a question that has been debated many times between friends and family and, if your experiences are anything like mine, it never ends in agreement. This is a subject that people on both sides of the fence are passionate about, in and out of the BBWAA.

Getting support from that group likely won’t be any easier. Bonds and Clemens will forever be linked to the use of performance-enhancing drugs, although they never failed an MLB-administered test. While both were listed in the 2007 Mitchell Report, and later faced charges of perjury in relation to their denials, neither one was convicted.

It’s worth noting that while the Mitchell Report investigated the use of PEDs and named 89 players, the roles individual teams and the league itself played in the scandal were not pursued. Instead, almost all the attention was placed on a small group of high-profile athletes. It was little more than a dog-and-pony show that assigned blame to a select few, presumably while hundreds of others got away with their misdeeds.
