One dead, many injured in Abuja auto crash

One person has been confirmed dead and others injured in a vehicle accident in Abuja.According to eyewitnesses, the accident was as a result of over-speeding by a lorry carrying sand, which collided with a taxi and killed the driver in the process.

“There was a very serious and fatal accident at Bwari-Dutse expressway. The accident happened close to the army checkpoint in Bwari,” one eyewitness said.“The taxi driver is dead and many were injured. There are a lot of casualties. Two taxis were compressed under the lorry.” reported that the Federal Road Safety Corps said 1,441 people died, and 8,339 others were injured in 2,733 auto crashes across the country between January and March.

Dauda Biu, the corps marshal, said over-speeding contributed to the skyrocketing number of road fatalities globally.Biu lamented that attempts to enforce the policy on the installation of speed-limiting devices in commercial vehicles have been futile.
