Ondo State, School Kidnapping Rumour, Akure

The Ondo State Government and Police Command have dismissed social media rumours of a school kidnapping in Akure, confirming all schools are safe and no such incident occurred.

The Ondo State Government and the state Police Command have jointly dismissed rumours circulating on social media about a kidnapping incident in a school within Akure metropolis.

In a statement released by Ebenezer Adeniyan, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the government categorically denied any such occurrence, emphasizing that there is no record of kidnapping in any primary, secondary or tertiary institution in Akure. The statement read, The Government categorically states that there is no record, report, or incident of kidnapping in any primary, secondary, or tertiary institution in Akure. All schools in the state capital are safe, open, and conducting academic activities without disruption.

It further added that security agencies including the Police, Amotekun Corps, and the Department of State Services have thoroughly verified all school environments in Akure and confirmed normalcy. The government, in collaboration with school authorities and parents, continues to maintain strict security protocols to ensure the safety of students and pupils at all times. Residents, particularly parents and guardians, were urged to disregard the fake news and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic and anxiety.

The administration reiterated that the safety of children and teachers remains a top priority and advised citizens to report any genuine security concerns to the nearest security agency. The Ondo State Police Command also debunked the rumour, describing it as false and capable of causing public panic. In a statement from its spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the Command stated there is no credible intelligence or reported incident indicating the presence of bandits in Akure.

The Command wishes to categorically dismiss the rumours currently circulating in some parts of Akure and on social media alleging an invasion of bandits within the metropolis, the statement said. It assured residents, especially parents, students, school authorities, and the general public, that comprehensive security assessments and intelligence gathering have not revealed any threat that should warrant panic or disruption of normal activities.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, urged everyone to remain calm and allow students to continue their academic activities without fear. The Command warned against the spread of misinformation, stating that offenders would be investigated and prosecuted. They also encouraged residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through official channels. This incident highlights the dangers of misinformation in a digital age where unverified news can quickly spread and cause unnecessary alarm.

The swift response from both the state government and police demonstrates their commitment to transparency and public safety. By issuing clear denials and calling for calm, authorities aim to restore confidence among parents and students. The collaboration between various security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps and DSS, underscores the multi-layered approach to security in Ondo State. While the current situation remains peaceful, the government continues to urge vigilance and responsible sharing of information.

Citizens are reminded to rely on official sources for accurate updates and to avoid amplifying rumours that could undermine public order. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fact-checking and the role of media literacy in preventing panic. Moving forward, the state government plans to enhance communication channels to ensure timely dissemination of verified information and to counter false narratives effectively
