Enoch Adegoke’s dream of becoming the first Nigerian man to win a 100 metres Olympic medal came to an end on Sunday as he pulled up midway into the final of the blue ribband event that was won by Italian sprinter Lamont Marcell Jacobs.

In the end he came home with time to spare in a blistering run that is a personal and European best and came moments after compatriot Gianmarco Tamberi won gold in the high jump.Tamberi, whose career almost came to an end a few years ago, and Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim both won the gold medal in the Olympic men’s high jump after being offered the chance to share the top prize by the official.

Tamberi failed to clear the bar with his final jump and embraced Barshim as they went to speak to the official and the Qatari asked “Can we not have two golds?” The official responded “It’s possible if you both decide” and before he had finished speaking Barshim offered Tamberi his hand to agree to sharing the gold and the pair embraced before Tamberi wheeled away in celebration.
