The youth wing of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nigeria's apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has criticized a proposal by the House of Representatives to create five new states for the South-East. They argue that this falls short of addressing their long-standing concerns about marginalization and would further disadvantage the region.
The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, has rejected the proposed creation of five additional states for the South-East region of Nigeria . This rejection comes amidst a proposal by Nigeria 's House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review to create 31 new states across the country. If approved, this would bring the total number of states in Nigeria to 67, up from the current 36, including the Federal Capital Territory.
The proposal outlines a diverse range of new states, including Okun, Okura, and Confluence states from Kogi; Benue Ala and Apa states from Benue; FCT state; Amana state from Adamawa; Katagum from Bauchi; and Savannah states from Borno and Muri State from Taraba. Furthermore, the list includes New Kaduna and Gujarat from Kaduna State; Tiga and Ari from Kano; and Kainji from Kebbi State; Etiti, Orashi, Adada, Orlu and Aba from the South East. Other proposed states are Ogoja from Cross River State, Warri from Delta, Ori and Obolo from Rivers, Torumbe from Ondo, Ibadan from Oyo, Lagoon from Lagos, Ogun, Ijebu from Ogun State, and Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo/Ogun/Osun States.However, Ohanaeze youths argue that this proposal will further exacerbate the marginalization experienced by the South-East. Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the National President of Ohanaeze Youth Council Worldwide, stated that Ndigbo have long complained about feeling marginalized, particularly because they currently possess only five states, compared to six or seven states in other regions. Okwu expressed concern that allocating only five additional states to the South-East, while other regions receive more, would only worsen existing tensions. He urged the National Assembly to reconsider this proposal to prevent further alienation of the South-East populace. He emphasized that any genuine attempt to unify the country should begin by granting the South-East two additional states. Subsequently, an equal number of states should be created for each region to ensure parity. Okwu criticized the South-East members of the House of Representatives for accepting a proposal that is demonstrably biased against their region. He urged them to revise their stance and rectify this imbalance in the interest of national unity
