The leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo , the apex socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people of Nigeria , has issued a strong warning against linking the Igbo community to the killing of 16 hunters in Uromi , Edo State . Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo , stated in a Sunday statement that the Igbo people have no connection whatsoever to the incident.
The tragedy unfolded when 16 hunters traveling from Rivers State to Kano State for the Eid celebration were tragically lynched in Edo State. Suspicion of kidnapping led to their interception by local vigilante operatives, who discovered guns and daggers in their possession. This heinous act has sparked widespread outrage, prompting a presidential order for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible. Adding to the pressure, the Northern Elders Forum has issued an ultimatum to the Edo State government, demanding compensation for the victims of the mob violence.Isiguzoro emphasized the importance of accurate information dissemination, urging all leaders and groups to inform their communities, particularly young people, that Uromi is located in Edo State, a state in Nigeria's South-South region. He stressed that Uromi is not part of Igboland and has no association with the Igbo people. The residents of Uromi predominantly belong to the Esan ethnic group and should not be mistakenly identified as Igbo. He further condemned the callous act and expressed deep concern over attempts to falsely associate the Igbo people with the incident. Isiguzoro warned against any potential retaliatory actions targeting Igbo individuals or communities residing in the Northern region. He expressed solidarity with Northern leaders and the bereaved families of the victims, conveying his sincere condolences.He underscored the urgent need for collective condemnation of violence in all forms, regardless of the ethnic backgrounds involved, and called upon government agencies at all levels to proactively address the escalating tension among the populace
