Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki rejects a panel report alleging financial misconduct, calling it an attempt by Governor Okpebholo to justify his actions against elected officials. Obaseki argues that Okpebholo lacks the authority to investigate elected officials and that the report is politically motivated.
The immediate past Governor of Edo State , Godwin Obaseki, has dismissed the findings of an administrative panel of inquiry that allegedly indicted him and others of financial impropriety. Obaseki stated that the report, which was commissioned by Governor Monday Okpebholo , is another attempt by his successor to justify his unconstitutional actions against democratically elected local government officials.
The administrative panel, headed by Solomon Imohiosen, investigated the financial accounts of the 18 impeached local government chairmen in Edo State between September 4, 2023, and November 2024. The report, submitted to Governor Okpebholo at the weekend, alleged that Obaseki, alongside some local government chairmen and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, mismanaged or diverted a sum of N95,080,676,687.86 received from the Joint Allocation Account Committee (JAAC) during the period under review. Governor Okpebholo vowed to take the indicted individuals to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution. However, Obaseki, speaking through his media aide, Crusoe Osagie, refuted the allegations, arguing that Okpebholo lacks the authority to investigate elected government officials. He emphasized that the local government chairmen have a stronger claim to their democratic office than Okpebholo, whose election is being challenged in the election petition tribunal. Obaseki further stated that he never sought to control local government funds during his tenure, unlike Okpebholo, who appears fixated on doing so. He urged the public to ignore the alleged lies and falsehoods propagated by his successor, asserting that he ran the most transparent government in Edo State's history. Obaseki also noted that he never had control over local government funds during his eight-year tenure as governor
