Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president of Nigeria, says he will distribute hearing aids to 10,000 indigent people in the north-east of the country. He added that he was only aware that he was suffering from a 25 percent hearing loss after he was examined abroad. He also encouraged more people to embark on medical examinations to ascertain whether they were auditory impaired to a certain degree or not.

“After my result came out, I had to ask the man to also check on my chief security officer then, but shockingly, he was more deaf than I was,” Obasanjo said. The retired general said the experience informed the establishment of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, with “thousands of Nigerians” now benefitting from the foundation’s ear treatments and hearing aids.
