Obasanjo calls for new constitution
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the executive and the legislature to work together towards producing a brand new constitution for Nigeria, before the situation in the country gets out hand.
Speaking at the first Dr. Frederick Fasehun Memorial Lecture in Lagos Saturday, Obasanjo said it would appear members of the National Assembly are fully aware of the lurking danger and wants to be proactive on handling it, but seem to be handicapped. He said “the Nigerian Constitution does not give the National Assembly the power to write a new Constitution but the power to amend existing one”.
He added: “What is required is a new Constitution to meet the agitation and aspiration of all Nigerians and to allay all fears.”
