From Sophie Grégoire to Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau to Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the prime minister's wife has changed her name over the years.
“I get called ‘madam’ because of protocol very often,” Grégoire Trudeau said. “And it just — my ears screech every time, I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m not a madam.’”
After Trudeau became prime minister in 2015, the Prime Minister’s Office announced that Grégoire’s preferred full name was Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, making her the first wife of a prime minister with a hyphenated last name, and other than Joe Clark’s wife Maureen McTeer, the only prime ministerial spouse whose last name differed from that of her partner.
