Greg Simon is a native of Kaduna State and the founder of Project Speak Inclusion, a non-profit organisation that is into humanitarian works. He told ERIC DUMO how suffering polio at the age of five changed his lifeIt really affected me in a lot of ways. Before I lost my ability to walk, I used to be a very active child who loved to play football with the other kids around. But after I lost my ability to walk, a lot of things changed. I couldn’t play around with the others anymore.
I was bullied by a lot of people, including my peers because they believed I couldn’t fight for myself. Children I was older than also bullied me. Living an independent life was not there, I had to depend on my siblings to do a lot of basic things for me. It was not an easy period for me but through the mercies of God, I overcame those challenges.
Even in church, there were times when the other children who saw me crawling would sometimes run away from me like I was a ghost. On the contrary, I think the sad experience has empowered my inner mind to believe and work on extraordinary things. Many people saw my physical disability but I saw my internal ability to solve problems using my story to inspire and heal even those who are not living with physical disabilities.
However, I was denied admission into the university on two separate occasions. But I eventually secured admission and studied Mass Communication at the university. Though those words weighed me down for a while, I had to make up my mind to prove his prediction wrong. By the grace of God, I am better than what many people predicted that I would be.Even though my mother died when I was eight years old, her love and care for me was second to none. Since she departed, my siblings, especially the first child of the family, has not failed to play a special role in my life.
