The recent National Judicial Council’s recommendation of 33 nominees for appointment as judges of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, is bound to set off crisis of courtrooms deficit in t

he capital city’s judiciary,An investigation which took our correspondent to different divisional locations of the FCT High Court, reveals that the High Court currently has about 51 courtrooms with 34 serving judges.

A voluntary organisation of Nigerian lawyers, the Open Bar Initiative, has already sent a petition to the President urging him to reject the list of recommended candidates on the grounds that the process leading to it was marred by “violation of applicable NJC rules for selection and appointment of superior court judges,” “judicial insider dealing”, as well as violation of federal character principle.

But by the time the NJC, which conducted the second stage of the process of appointment of judges to the High Court, released the list of successful candidates recommended to the President for the appointment in April, the figure had ballooned to 33, which is more than double the number of judges that the Chief Judge claimed in July 2019 was approved by the CJN and Chairman of NJC, Justice Tanko Muhammad.

The count conducted by our correspondent shows that there are 51 courtrooms numbered in the order of seniority of judges occupying them and are distributed across the locations as follows: Maitama with 11 courtrooms, Wuse Zone has two, Jabi with eight, Gudu has two, Apo has 11, Kwali has two, Abaji has one, Kubwa has two, Zuba has one, Gwagwalada has one, Nyanya has two, Kuje has one, Lugbe has one, Bwari has two and Adza has four.Justice V.V.

Our correspondent visited a court complex site of the FCT judiciary located in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, and found out that the site had not been developed beyond foundation level.
