The National Judicial Council has dismissed a petition by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court.
The NJC, headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, said the EFCC’s petition against the judge lacked merit.
The anti-graft agency had alleged that Justice Taiwo tied its hands from doing its job through the grant of an ex parte application. It sought the NJC’s disciplinary action against the judge. But in a May 11, 2020 letter by its Secretary, Ahmed Saleh, the NJC said after considering the EFCC’s petition and Justice Taiwo’s response, it could not find any substance in the allegation of infraction levelled against the judge by the EFCC.
“The Council noted that all the steps taken by the learned trial judge in handling the cases were in accord with the laws and procedure legally available. “Consequently, Council dismissed the petition for lack of merit. You are therefore advised to appeal against the ruling if you wish, please,” the NJC’s letter to the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, read in part.“After deliberation, Council could not find any substance of infraction committed by the learned trial judge,” Saleh said.
