President of the Association of Lagos State Courier Operators, Akindele Akinwande,
We also have challenges with local governments. We go out on some days and they apprehend your bikes. When you call to find out, ‘What was the reason why this bike was apprehended?’ they tell you, ‘There is a new document that came out today.’ So, a new document that we’re not even aware of comes out today and they are already enforcing it. And we have to pay ridiculous amounts to purchase these documents.
Then it also came up with the SMEs plan, which is N250,000 for the licence and then N100,000 annually. By the understanding that we have, Domino’s Pizza, for instance, is not into courier services. But it has dispatch bikes that it uses to deliver pizza and whatever else it sells. That SME plan is for people like them. Or, perhaps, a pharmacy that has a bike it uses to dispatch drugs to its customers; they are not using it for ‘pick and drop.
