The Nigerian Meteorological Agency recently recertified its ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 29990: 2010. The first is for the provision of aerometeoro

logical services for the nation’s aviation industry, while the second is for capacity building at the NiMet’s Regional Training Centre in Lagos and the Muhammadu Buhari Meteorological Institute of Science and Technology, Katsina. The National Board for Technical Education accredited the MBMIST as a training centre that offers diploma courses in meteorology, applied meteorology and climate change.

The Natural Resources Defence Council, a US-based environmental advocacy group, released a research which posited that goal setting – both mandatory and voluntary – could help America reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero before 2050. I believe this reality could be extrapolated for Nigeria which set a target of 2060 for itself. This goes beyond the fiscal roadmap of the country’s energy transition plan designed to achieve the net zero.

It is instructive to note that NiMet has revealed that it has been approached by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to assist and guide them to acquire this certification. I am of the view that other climate-related government institutions, like the NCCC, should also take a cue.
