NIMC needs N132bn to register 200 million Nigerians – Aziz, DG SaturdayMorning

Director-General of the National Identity Management Agency, Aliyu Aziz, speaks on the national identification number, the challenges and other related issues in this interview with ALEXANDER OKERE

Nigerians have lamented the delay in the registration for the national identification number and obtaining the card. What is responsible for that? We started in April when the new passport was launched and the directive was that the NIN should be embossed on the passport. Nigerians in the Diaspora are the main consumers of the passport. Therefore, we had to quickly license Nigerian companies that have services out there to capture the data and send to the back end. So, we just commenced and I believe that to guard against fraud, anyone that wants to do business with you will ask for your NIN.

How would you respond to allegations that NIMC officials demand and receive bribes from Nigerians to fast-track the NIN registration and issuance of the card? Well, the focus should be on the number and you can get the number instantly after registration. But for the card, due to the recession and the economic downturn, we will not be able to produce the card at the rate at which we produce the NIN. Therefore, we have separated the job and told every Nigerian to focus on the NIN and that in the future, we will allow the private sector to produce the card.
