Political scientist and former Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Prof Femi Omotoso, tells ABIODUN NEJO of the need for change from poverty, religion and ethnicity which have blindfolded the populace and denied the country of good leadership

What we need in the country is good governance. The major issue should be the capacity to deliver. What we should demand as Nigerians is good governance. If we can have that, I can assure you that Nigeria will have sustainable development. Good governance is predicated on having credible and able people in the state and national assemblies. If Mr President or the governor is not doing well, they will do the needful. But today, nobody can raise anything against a governor.

It appears three or four political parties are leading the pack, going by the antecedents of the PDP and APC, do you think Nigerians will vote for these two parties again in 2023? In developing nations, those things that determine voting behaviour are primordial sentiments, such as poverty. It is not by performance or capacity. It is unfortunate that on the day of election, people who promised to vote for a certain political party might vote for another party if their bread is buttered. There is no ideology in the country. People are not committed to ideology and to political parties.

In those days, people were making contributions to political parties. Committed members were paying dues, but today the parties are giving out money and material gifts to attract people, and you won’t see them for the next four years. Ordinarily, people are supposed to have learnt something.People, unfortunately are not learning; maybe because of poverty, religious and ethnic sentiments. Religion and ethnicity have been the deciding factors, and not the candidate’s ability or capability.
