The Senate Committee on Finance aims to increase investor participation and knowledge in Nigeria's capital market through a proposed N10 billion allocation for literacy programs.

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Senate expressed its commitment to bolstering investor education and participation in the nation's capital market. During a meeting, the Senate Committee on Finance led by Senator Izunaso emphasized the crucial role of the capital market in driving economic development and highlighted the need for increased awareness and understanding among Nigerian investors. Izunaso stressed that despite the capital market's current progress, participation levels remain low.

He pointed to a limited number of companies listed on the exchange compared to the overall number of operating businesses in the country. To address these challenges, the committee proposed a N10 billion special funding allocation for capital market literacy within the 2025 budget. This initiative aims to equip investors with the knowledge and tools necessary to confidently engage in the market.Senator Izunaso commended the Finance Minister, Edun, for his unwavering support in repositioning the capital market and fostering investor confidence. Edun, in his remarks, echoed the importance of a stable and investment-friendly environment, attributing Nigeria's current progress to President Tinubu's economic strategies. He noted the positive start of the year for the stock market, reflecting investor optimism and resilience. Edun highlighted the potential for government initiatives to encourage broader participation and savings through the stock market, particularly by leveraging existing pension accounts where civil servants and salary earners contribute monthly. He emphasized the need to channel these savings towards investments that will fuel economic growth and prosperity
