The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba-Alkali, has asked political parties and politicians to allow the police to regulate their campaigns for the 2023 general elections. The IGP, who made this known on Sunday in Maiduguri, Borno State, while speaking with journalists, gave assurance of the force’s commitment to ensure security during the elections. He asserted that the measure was to curtail any possible breakdown of law and order.

He noted that the 10,000 policemen earlier recruited by the force had been deployed to their various Local Government Areas to enhance community policing. “The Commissioner of Police is not saying you must apply for a permit before you campaign or rally but for him to know so that he can provide security for the venue of the campaign or to tell you if another party is also campaigning, for you to adjust to another date.“Right now, we have another 10,000 recruits undergoing training that we hope to graduate before the election.”
