A Nigerian professor of law, Prof. Yemi Oke, has written an open letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Justin Pierre James Trudeau and the US President, Mr. Joe Biden, over a celebrated Nigerian author, Chimamanda Adichie’s open letter to President Biden against recognising Bola Tinubu as the winner of Nigeria's 2023 presidential election.

Adichie had in an open letter to President Biden titled “Nigeria’s Hollow Democracy” described the 2023 presidential election as an “illegitimate process” that led to Tinubu’s victory, and said by “Congratulating its outcome, President Biden tarnishes America’s self-proclaimed commitment to democracy.”

Reacting to the letter which has since generated mixed reactions including attacks from Tinubu’s camp, Oke on Sunday accused Adichie of committing sedition in her letter to Biden, and described the letter as a case of “extraordinary ethnocentric politicking of a non-resident Nigerian-American.” Oke in the open letter titled ‘Re: Chimamanda’s Seditious Open Letter To President Joe Biden - A Case Of Extraordinary Ethnocentric Politicking of A Non-Resident Nigerian-American’, also accused Adichie of undermining Nigeria’s judicial process.

Prof. Oke’s letter to the US President and the Canadian Prime Minister described Chimamanda as having an “over-bloated ego of perceived global self-esteem”. It said, “Chimamanda's claims and assertions on the recently concluded Presidential elections in Nigeria is not only ludicrous, it is also illogical, baseless and depicts ignoble ranting of an uninformed mind about legal and judicial processes or procedures. It is unimaginable that someone who did not participate or vote in an election would make categorical statements about an election she did not witness.
