Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association ( NBA ), has confirmed the release of Port Harcourt-based lawyer Kelvin Okorie , who had been in detention since September 2024. DAILY POST reports that Okorie, initially detained by the Nigerian Navy , was transferred to the Nigerian Police Force on Friday following direct intervention by the NBA . According to a statement by the NBA President, Okorie was received by members of the association in Abuja on Monday after his freedom.
The NBA president stated that Okorie's visit was an opportunity to express gratitude for the Association's efforts in securing his freedom. 'The NBA, under my leadership, engaged directly with the Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G. Musa, on January 7, 2025, advocating for Mr. Okorie’s release. This intervention led to his transfer from naval custody to the Nigerian Police and ultimately to his release on January 11, 2025. During our meeting, Mr. Okorie shared his experiences and reaffirmed his commitment to active participation in Bar activities. His resolve underscores the importance of unity and vigilance within our profession', stated the NBA president.
