The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reported a decrease in internet subscribers for the country in December 2024, despite overall growth in telecommunications services. The analysis reveals trends across various telecom providers and highlights key statistics about data usage and broadband penetration.
The Nigerian Communications Commission ( NCC ) reported a decline in the country's internet subscribers in December 2024, reaching 139.28 million, a decrease of 24.5 million or 15 percent compared to the previous year. While mobile (GSM) subscriptions dominated with 138.77 million users, fixed wired and VoIP services accounted for the remaining subscribers. An analysis by TheCable Index revealed that all telecom companies witnessed an increase in internet subscriptions except for 9mobile.
MTN Nigeria led the way with a surge of 1.61 million internet subscribers in December, reaching 72.22 million, up from 70.60 million in November. On a year-on-year basis, MTN's internet subscriber base expanded by 1.56 million compared to 70.65 million in December 2023. Airtel followed with a gain of 1.24 million subscribers, climbing from 46.17 million in November to 47.41 million in December, marking a year-on-year increase of 2.34 million. Globacom experienced a slight dip, dropping from 17.19 million subscribers in November to 17 million in December, a decrease of 117,711. Conversely, 9mobile remained stagnant with 2.06 million subscribers between November and December 2024, but lost 1.56 million subscribers compared to December 2023. The NCC also reported a total of 164.9 million subscribers for telephony services in December 2024, an increase of 5 million from November but a decline of 59.7 million compared to December 2023. MTN held the largest share with 84.6 million active telephony subscribers, followed by Airtel with 56.61 million, Globacom with 20.13 million, and 9mobile with 3.23 million. Broadband penetration increased from 43.16 percent in November 2024 to 44.43 percent in December, indicating a growing reliance on high-speed internet access. Data usage also saw a significant jump, reaching 973,455.35 terabytes in December, a notable increase of 260,254.75 terabytes compared to December 2023. 5G and 4G networks accounted for 2.46 percent and 47.2 percent of data usage respectively, while 3G contributed 8.75 percent in December 2024
