Researchers have said that dearth of geriatric doctors is a big risk factor for death among elderly people who are admitted in hospital for medical treatment.
Geriatrics is the branch of medicine or social science dealing with the health and care of old people.
They lamented that scarcity of data on the mortality and associated factors among elderly patients admitted to the hospital medical wards has also made it difficult to know why elderly patients die during hospital stay. A former President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Mike Ogirima, decried what he described as “acute shortage of geriatric doctors in Nigeria,” calling on the Federal Government to establish the department of geriatrics in the nation’s teaching hospitals as we have in paediatrics.
