The Nigerian government has charged three men with terrorism for abducting schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. The charges include conspiracy, aiding kidnapping, and membership in a proscribed group, following a rescue operation that freed 44 hostages but left two teachers and three security personnel dead.
The Nigeria n government has filed 10 terrorism charges against three men in connection with the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The charges, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, name Abdulrazak Umar (also known as Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (also known as Yunusa bin Musa), and Shamsu Adamu Sani (also known as Abu Itisar) as defendants. The charges, brought by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, include terrorism, conspiracy, aiding kidnapping, and concealment of terrorist activities.
Additional allegations against the trio include membership in a proscribed terrorist organization, incitement to terrorism, provision of terrorist training, cyber-related offenses, and unlawful mining. The prosecution alleges that the defendants, all from Suleja Local Government Area in Niger State, conspired with Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed, and Ibrahim Khabab-who remain at large-to kidnap the pupils and teachers between January and May.
They are accused of aiding the abduction and concealing information about the identities and activities of the alleged masterminds, despite having prior knowledge of the plot. The charges also assert that the defendants professed membership in Darul Salam, described as an affiliate of Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (Ansaru), a proscribed terrorist group in Nigeria.
Separate counts against the first defendant, Mr. Umar, accuse him of providing training and instructions to terrorists and inciting members through a WhatsApp group titled The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace. He is also accused of engaging in unlawful gold mining in the Chaza area of Suleja between 2024 and 2026.
The charges come just a week after the Nigerian military, in collaboration with other security forces, rescued 44 schoolchildren and teachers abducted from three schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele in Oyo State. During the rescue operation, two of the three abducted teachers were killed in captivity. One teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was beheaded days after his abduction, while another, a pastor named John Olaleye, was also killed.
Three security personnel lost their lives in the operation: Lieutenant F. A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army, Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force. President Bola Tinubu confirmed that some kidnappers were killed during the rescue and at least eight terrorists were arrested. The charges are a significant step in addressing the growing threat of school abductions in northern Nigeria, where such attacks have become increasingly common
