Nigeria accounts for 40 per cent of obstetric fistula global burden –Physician
A Maternal and Child Health Consultant, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Dr. Alero Roberts says Nigeria accounts for 40 per cent of the global burden of obstetric fistula.
According to the United Nations Population Fund, Nigeria has 148, 000 cases of fistula and records about 12,000 new cases every year. Nigeria is one of the countries with the highest number of VVF cases globally. “Precise numbers are difficult to quote but it is estimated that almost 3.5million girls and women are living with untreated fistulae, with an incidence of 50,000 to 100,000 new cases annually in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.“They often come from remote and poor areas where infrastructure is underdeveloped and access to health care, particularly emergency obstetric care, is lacking,” notes Dr. Roberts.
“Child marriage is more popular in the Northern part of the country, with figures as high as 76 per cent.Dr. Robert says obstetric fistulae is worsened by the disparate access to healthcare in rural areas. “Poverty, illiteracy, restriction of movement of women, lack of permission from husbands and inadequate transportation all add to the burden of the problem,” she said.
