Despite the advent of palliative care, green burials and sympathy cards for pets, death is still something we do everything we can to avoid until … . Even judging from the experience of my friends, when that death isn’t ours.
But what’s truly remarkable is how sudden this has all been and continues to be. For millennia, death existed side by side with life. No one could deny it because no one could escape it. It was there — always. The sick were often cared for at home, and when they died, their bodies were laid out for viewing. When I grew up, this was no longer true.
