According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari disclosed this while unveiling the new Customs headquarters, named CUSTOMS HOUSE, in Abuja on Tuesday.
“We are all aware of our Customs Service’s challenges, particularly the fragile borders that provide opportunities for illicit activities. The recent increase in transnational crimes, smuggling, and security threats necessitates a robust and agile customs administration. I am fully conscious of these challenges and the urgent need to address them.
“I am pleased to highlight that in line with our commitment to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our customs administration, I recently signed the Customs Bill into law. The new act, a product of extensive consultations and deliberations, represents a significant step towards modernizing our customs operations, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and promoting trade facilitation.
In April 2023, Buhari assented to the reformation of Nigeria’s Administration and Management Act of Customs and Excise.
