The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission's request to regulate the state's electricity supply, furthering the liberalization of Nigeria's power sector.

The Nigeria n Electricity Regulatory Commission ( NERC ) has granted the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC) permission to regulate the state's electricity supply industry. This move, announced in a notice seen by DAILY POST, aligns with the 2023 Electricity Act and the liberalization of the electricity sector. The NERC stated that the approval is in accordance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act 2023.

NERC maintains its role as a central regulator overseeing interstate/international generation, transmission, supply, trading, and system operations, as mandated by the EA 2023. The Act also requires states aspiring to regulate intrastate electricity markets to formally notify NERC and request the transfer of regulatory authority. The Niger State government fulfilled these conditions, notified NERC, and requested the transfer of intrastate electricity market regulation to NERC. Consequently, NERC directed the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to incorporate a subsidiary within 60 days to handle interstate supply and distribution of electricity in Niger State. This development marks another state in Nigeria granted oversight of its electricity supply sector
