The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA ) has revealed that an estimated 14 million Nigeria ns are involved in the abuse of harmful drugs. This alarming statistic was shared by Yetunde Joyifous, deputy commander of the NDLEA , during an awareness program organized by the Oijefon Youth Council for secondary schools in Ile Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo state on Wednesday.
Joyifous emphasized the crucial need for community-wide collaboration to effectively tackle the drug abuse problem. She highlighted that chemical drugs, which have detrimental effects on the minds of users, are the most commonly abused substances. Joyifous stressed that engaging all stakeholders within the community to work alongside authorities is the only way to combat this dangerous trend. She pointed out that secondary school students are particularly vulnerable and called for intensified efforts to safeguard them from drug abuse. Adedokun Adeyonu, president of the Oijefon Youth Council, stated that the program was designed to deter young people from engaging in drug abuse. He defined drug abuse as the misuse of harmful substances like alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs, which inflict harm on both the body and mind. Adeyonu attributed the prevalence of drug use among young people to a combination of factors, including curiosity, peer pressure, and the desire to escape life's challenges. The event drew a significant attendance, including secondary school students from Ile Oluji and representatives from the National Orientation Agency (NOA)
